HMRC has begun moving its online services to GOV.UK One Login, a new system designed to make accessing government services simpler and more secure.
If you use HMRC services for Self Assessment, business taxes or payroll, here’s what the change means for you.
What is GOV.UK One Login?
GOV.UK One Login is a single account that allows you to access multiple government services using one email address and password.
The aim is to replace the current Government Gateway system over time, creating one secure sign-in for services such as:
- Filing a Self Assessment tax return
- Managing business taxes
- Accessing personal tax information
- Renewing official documents such as passports (in the future)
This is part of the government’s wider move towards digital tax and online services.
What’s Changing for New HMRC Users?
If you are registering for HMRC online services for the first time, the process is now different.
Instead of receiving a 10–12 digit Government Gateway ID, you will:
- Create an account using your email address and password
- Set up your identity through the GOV.UK One Login system
- Use this single login to access HMRC services going forward
This change only applies to new users at the moment.
What About Existing Government Gateway Users?
If you already have a Government Gateway account, there is nothing you need to do right now.
- You can continue logging in as normal
- Your current details will still work
- You do not need to create a GOV.UK One Login yet
HMRC plans to move existing users across gradually and will contact you when it’s time to switch.
It’s also worth noting that even if you already use GOV.UK One Login for another government service, you’ll still need your Government Gateway details to access HMRC for now.
Why the Change Matters
The move to GOV.UK One Login is part of HMRC’s long-term digital strategy. Over time, it will:
- Simplify access to government services
- Improve security and identity checks
- Reduce the number of login details you need to remember
- Support the wider rollout of digital initiatives such as Making Tax Digital (MTD)
For businesses and individuals who regularly interact with HMRC, this is another step towards a fully digital tax system.
